Music is "Mi"

Hi there! I am Madison (Maddi) Prince, a lover of music (and dogs). I began as a choir kid in Young Singers of the Palm Beaches, occasionally singing in my temple choir as well. I took piano lessons for a year or two in elementary school, but the interest didn't catch on until later. In the summer before fifth grade, I signed up for a guitar class when I went to a sleepaway camp, and the rest is history. In high school, my journey with percussion started in the marching band. I fell in love with eurythmics and the marimba. Over the years, I enjoyed trying to learn whatever instrument I could.

I grew up in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, where most grandparents live. My family, and of course, my dog, form the roots of who I am. My dog Coco was known as "my shadow" because she followed me everywhere. My family is full of crazy people I love dearly, and I'm proud to be in their lives. Friendship is just as important to me. I value those in my inner circle as much as my family. Many of my friends are musicians, so I surround myself with sound, which I believe is the way life should be lived.

Recently, the song I have been throwing on Spotify more than most others is "Santeria" by Sublime, even though I've known and loved this song for years. The reggae-style rhythm and easy beat always bring me a wave of serotonin, and I can't help but love a good ballad. I didn't pay much attention to the meaning until a few years ago when I listened to my friend sing while playing the guitar.

While I was in elementary school, I went to the after-care program. I met three amazing people when I was there, two of which are still my closest friends. We would sing "Damaged" by Danity Kane over and over again, somehow never getting tired of it. We'd take turns harmonizing or singing different octaves, and it was a memory we all still cherish. The memories I have with the most important people in my life created a strong emotional association for me.

I have trouble connecting with rap music, but I can resonate with a few songs. I focus on the intention of the music. For example, I'm not the biggest fan of Lil Wayne, but he wrote a song with Bruno Mars called "Mirror," which I think is beautiful and meaningful. I hear a lot of songs about money, drugs, sex, or power. Others may find that motivating, but it is not the life I want.

What I use music for the most is to feel empowered and motivated. I love to listen to "Miles" by Phillip Phillips. This song is about dealing with the stress of life and overcoming obstacles to be the best version of oneself. Whenever I need a pick-me-up, I repeat until I feel like I can take over the world.

  1. Great taste in music, Maddi! I love Santeria! Use to play that one with my old band back in highschool. One of my favorites to do on electric, so we'll need to jam with that one some time in the future. I can't say I'm familiar with this other music, but It's sweet to hear how you bonded with three people whom you're still in good relations with. Music really does keep people together!

  2. I think it's really cool how even if you don't really like a genre, you can still focus on the artists intentions. I've been trying to do the same with music I don't connect with and it's hard! Also, thank you for putting Santeria in here because it's immediate serotonin for me too.
